It is known as a polypropylene trash bin containing Ag nanoparticles. The concentration of silver ions is 10 ppm in it. It also prevents the growth of bacteria. Silver nanoparticles attach to the surface of the cell membrane and disturb such properties as permeability and respiration. It is reasonable to assume that the binding of the particles to the microorganisms depends on the surface area available for interaction. Smaller particles having the larger surface area available for the interaction will give a greater bactericidal effect than larger particles.
A waste container is usually made out of metal or plastic. These containers are made out of polymers such as polypropylene (PP). PP has a broad range of applications in manufacturing polymeric stuff due to its low cost production. The use of antimicrobial PP which is a class of polymers with antimicrobial activity has steadily increased. This is because the polymeric materials can easily be colonized by bacteria or fungi, frequently causing severe infections and transmitting disease. The prevention of microbial colonization of polymeric surfaces can be achieved by adding an active antimicrobial agent like silver nanoparticles into the polymers. Silver ions and compounds are highly toxic for a wide range of bacteria and they show very low toxicity for human cells, so that, the use of silver in different forms has been a common method for antibacterial protection. It is important to remark that the antibacterial effect of polymer-silver nanocomposit is preserved and good antibacterial efficiency against a wide variety of bacteria is observed.
