Zinc oxide

ZnO Nanoparticle /Nanopowder CAS Number : 1314-13-2
Diameter : 2 nm

Applications

This product is particularly used for manufacturing of antibacterial plastic stuff.
Plastics

Properties

It is known as a PE masterbatch containing ZnO nanoparticles. The average size of ZnO particles is around 30 nm. The concentration of ZnO is 7.84 Wt. % of the product. It also shows antibacterial activity relying on INSO 11900. In nano-scale, ZnO particles produce the reactive oxygen species rmore than ZnO bulk and so higher antibacterial activity appears in ZnO nanoparticles.

Manufacturer's Description

Polyethylene (PE) is the most commonly used plastic polymer in the world. Extensive research has been carried out in the last decades in order to investigate possible methods to prepare antibacterial plastics. New plastic materials with inherent antibacterial properties can be made for this purpose by polymerization or copolymerization of new monomers or by chemical modification and/or blending of polymers. Masterbatch (MB) is a solid or liquid additive for plastic used for coloring plastics (color masterbatch) or imparting other properties to plastics (additive masterbatch). The use of masterbatches allows the factory to keep stock of fewer grades of the polymer, and to buy cheaper natural polymer in bulk. The carrier material of the masterbatch can be based on a wax (universal carrier) or on a specific polymer, identical or compatible with the natural polymer used (polymer-specific). E.g. EVA or LDPE (Low-density polyethylene) can be used as carriers for polyolefin. LDPE was the first grade of polyethylene. Despite competition from more modern polymers, LDPE continues to be an important plastic grade. The most frequently used approach to prepare antibacterial plastics is to include various organic or inorganic substances, such as tea extract, chitosan, copper, silver, zinc, etc. in polymer matrices. Nanoparticles of ZnO are being used industrially for modifications to plastics. A common feature is its antibacterial activity. The antibacterial activity of it has been demonstrated against human pathogenic bacteria, mainly E.Coli and S.aureus.
