HAnano Surface® combines several properties, known to improve osseointegration, in one unique surface modification. The combination of high wettability and optimal surface chemistry with optimized nano-roughness, mediates bioactivity and specific protein adsorption to the implant. These properties regulate cell behavior and influences tissue regeneration by increasing the osteoblast functions, thus building more bone faster.

HAnano Surface introduces a new size regime for implant coatings. The nano-thin surface enables newly formed bone to grow directly into the micrometer topography, or roughness, of the implant surface, thus providing mechanical stability.

Compared to traditional coatings, where bone anchors to the coating, HAnano Surface does not act as an interface separating bone from the implant. Furthermore, with the particle based HAnano Surface there is no risk for cracking or delamination. In addition, since the dimensions of the implant are unchanged, there is no need for new drilling procedures or changes in instrument design.

HAnano Surface can be used on orthopedic, spinal and dental implants. The surface modification has excellent compatibility with various types of substrates, including metals, ceramics and polymers such as PEEK. HAnano Surface can transform the surface of any implant – regardless of geometry, structure or porosity – to a surface that resembles natural human bone tissue.

By using HAnano Surface on dental implants a surface super-hydrophilic surface can be created without changing the micro structure of the implant. The nano-thin surface modification, that can be used on both titanium and ceramic implants, has shown to increase anchoring strength by 35% during the first critical period of healing, opening for faster loading of the implant.

The surface modification with HAnano Surface is based on a wet chemical process. Only off-the-shelf equipment is required and can easily be implemented at existing implant manufacturing lines. For OEMs without in-house manufacturing capabilities, Promimic has established a strategic partnership with Danco Anodizing, a leading supplier of surface treatments to the medical device industry. Danco Anodizing has a fully implemented HAnano Surface production line in their facility in Warsaw, Indiana (US), which is now offered to Promimic’s customers.

 The technology behind HAnano Surface is versatile and can be used in many different applications. The surface modification can be used to increase hydrophilicity or bone cell activity on any material that can withstand a short heat treatment.

Sensor crystals for laboratorial analysis equipment are used to characterize proteins and anti-bodies, their interactions with other molecules, along with many other applications. This research is a central part in the development of pharmaceuticals and dental care products.

Through Promimic’s cooperation with the biosensor company Q-Sense, the hydroxyapatite has reached the market in the field of quartz crystal microbalance sensors. The product was launched in 2006 and is used worldwide.

Promimic sells nanosized crystalline hydroxyapatite, available as a powder or suspension. The specific surface area is 180 m2/ g.

This product can be used in R&D, as an ingredient in bone substitutes or as a chromatography material. Note that this product is non-sterile and not approved for human use.
