Platinum nanoparticles are of particular interest in catalysis, where platinum binds hydrogen, oxygen, and other gases. In the form of nanoparticles, platinum has a significantly better efficiency due to the high specific surface: With particle sizes of 10 nm, 20% of the platinum atoms are already in direct interaction with the environment of the nanoparticle. Platinum is slightly toxic to human cells and is therefore also used for commercial cancer therapy. Some new technical applications also take advantage of the precious metal's conductivity.
Higher purity requires higher catalytic effectiveness. However, the removal of ligands from chemically synthesized metal colloids is complex and usually not completely possible. Laser-generated nanoparticles are created directly from pure platinum and are therefore of the highest purity. The resulting nanoparticles are also ligand-free, so the process gives the nanoparticles maximum surface activity. We produce such platinum nanoparticles in water and organic solvents - and optionally combine them directly with catalytic carrier materials (supports) in order to achieve the highest adsorption efficiencies. In addition to their high purity, these nanocatalysts have high catalytic activity. Rows made of platinum alloys can also be produced.
