One of the main objectives in swine husbandry is efficient and sustainable production. Several factors such as raw material prices and increasing worldwide competition force farmers to optimize their production cycles. The withdrawal of animal proteins from feeds for food producing animals and the high prices for fish proteins, require nutritionists to produce feeds from vegetable protein sources. Vegetable proteins, such as soybean meal, sunflower meal, rapeseed meal, peas, beans, lupines and some agroindustrial by-products like dried distiller grains and solubles (DDGS), are of utmost interest nowadays. However, vegetable based feeds have high fiber content and oer a particular challenge for the micro-flora of the gastrointestinal tract. Moreover, plant proteins have lower digestibility than animal proteins, and some micro-organisms may grow exponentially on poorly digested nutrients.FRAmelco have developed FRA® Octazyme, containing eight declared enzyme activities. The efficacy of Non-Starch-Polysaccharide (NSP) enzymes, such as xylanase, -glucanase and cellulase, has been studied intensively. NSP enzymes lower intestinal viscosity, allowing high inclusion of small grains (wheat or barley). However, variation in the overall content and bioavailability of carbohydrates, fats, proteins and amino acids in feeds, has led to the development of various enzymes designed to liberate unavailable nutrients. To gain full benefit from diets with high levels of anti-nutritional factors (ANFs) and fibers, a multi enzyme system that contains both NSP-enzymes as well as α-galactosidase, -mannanase and pectinase, may be of great interest.  Moreover, especially in young piglets, production of endogenous enzymes may not yet be sufficient. Therefore, a protease and α-amylase supplementation may be needed to maximize the utilization of proteins and starch. This will improve animal performance and health.
