It is an organic clay complex formed by the reaction of higher molecular weight cationic compounds with highly purified Bentonitic substances. Hectone is specially meant for use as a gellant and thickenerfor the greases based on clay and medium to high V. I. mineral oils systems.
Studies have identified the mechanism by which (Hectone are able to impart full rheological control to a lubricating system. This mechanism encompasses four main areas of interest to the Grease manufacturing
(1) Dispersion(2) Gellation (3) Shear Sensitivity and (4) Mechanical Stability. Here these four factors can be achieve under single roof of HectoneWe would like to draw the attention of all grease manufacturer to one extremely important note on the commercial polar activators which appear to function as both dispersant and gellation promoter, such as Acetone, Methanol, Ethanol and Propylene Carbonate. It has been commonly held that in addition to functioning as dispersants, these activators are also hydrogen bonding participants in the network or molecular arrangement of Hectone platelets. Some are in confusion that whether these commercial chemical activators function in the dual role of dispersant or gel promoter, but from our study, it has been clearly concluded that dispersion and gellation are two separate and independent phenomena, further more all polar activators are dispersant to lubricating system but not simultaneously promote gellation.
Presently, there are mainly two polar activators in use (1) Acetone and(2) Propylene Carbonate.
Acetone contains small quantity of water and water promotes gellation in system to establish the desired hydrogen-bond network between clay platelets. To fulfill this idea we have developed Hectone 31, while Propylene Carbonate is an anhydrous polar activator performs as best dispersant of clay in lubricating system, we have developed Hectone 30.
However, cHedone prevents corrosion of bearing or any other surfaces even when water is present during use of the grease made from cHedone but it is advisable to use any best antioxidant in grease composition.
Polar Activators or Dispersants most useful in the compositions of grease formulations must be chosen very well so as to provide a minimum possibility for reaction with any portion of the diedone molecule.
The consumptions of polar activators is so wide from about 25 % to 100 % based on the weight of iHectone and depends on the quality of polar activators.
Organic Lubricating Liquids (Base Oil) in grease compositions must be chosen suitably so as to provide a minimum possibility for reaction with any portion of the cHedone molecules. The clay based greases comprise as their major ingredient an Organic Lubricating Liquid which is preferably mineral lubricating oil and particularly petroleum lubricating oil but which may be any one of, or a mixture of other oleaginous substances. These may be utilized in a admixture with mineral lubricating oils.
Hectone appears to swell in Lubricating Oil to a somewhat greater degree than other iHedone. Thus, at first, this may appear to be an economic advantage; the technical results are definitely detrimental. To obtain a best grease of a goodconsistency, it is necessary to use a somewhat larger ratio oi IHedone and Oil.

4 Colour : Creamy White5 Moisture Content : 3.0% max.6 Specific Gravity : 1.7127 Bulk Density : 0.458 Loss on Ignition : 40 % max.(D) FORMULATIONS, PROCEDURE AND TEST DATA CARRIED OUT ON Hectone 30 & Hectone 311) FORMULATION:1 Hectone 30 : 10.0% by Wt.2 Propylene Carbonate : 0.8% by Wt.3 Base Oil : 89.2% by Wt.I) Redone 31 : 10.0% by Wt.II) Acetone : 5.0% by Wt.III) Base Oil : 85.0% by Wt.2) Procedure:Charge 70 % of Base Oil in the open container and heated up to 44°C with continuous stirring (at 30- 35 rpm). Discontinue heating and add full quantity of bHedone 30 or cHedom 31 slowly in 30 min. duration by several installments with continuous stirring.
Add Propylene Carbonate in case of tHedone 30 and / or Acetone in case of cHectone 31slowly in 10 12 min. duration by several installment, this followed by addition of entire quantity of remaining 30 % base oil.
Stir the whole mass for another 30 min. at 30 - 35 rpm.
Mill whole mass by Colloid Mill at 25° to 30° C for single pass keeping 0.05 inch milling gap maximum.3) TESTING OF GREASE GEL:(AFTER24 HRS. OF MILLING): -1 Cone Penetration at 25° C temperature. A) A Customer surveys have indicated that grease manufacturer desiresEfficient Organoclay which improve grease yields by means of adding some useful filler and thereby lower requirement of Organoclay cost wise are more cost effective for the grease manufacturers.
Easier availing Organoclay gellants which improve grease production rate and batch to batch uniformity that is why we have developed a new class of organoclays and that is Hectone32.Hectone 32 development studies were conducted in various neutral base oils using Acetone as the polar activator to select a composition which met the desired requirements for a new more efficient grease gellant cHectone 32. After a candidate grease gellant Hectone 32 developed, samples were sent to grease producers for their evaluations and comments. As might be expected, the co-operating grease manufacturers used a variety of base oils, polar activators, processing procedures along with some useful grease fillers to increase the volume and weight of grease. Our R. & D. emphasized its mechanical stability as measured by the change in penetration after 10,000 double strokes in a grease worker while our Marketing Division emphasized its storage stability as measured by the change in penetration after several months of aging the grease sample
