The company began manufacturing MF/UF ceramic membranes in conventional tubular and flat sheet configurations in 2004 at its Halberstadt, Germany manufacturing site. Conventional ceramic membranes have been successfully installed in numerous “tough to treat” applications where polymeric membranes were known to, or suspected of failing. Applications such as deep well aquifer treatment for drinking water justified the typical 4-5 times price premium of ceramics over polymeric membranes given the incompatibility of polymerics with the high temperature conditions posed by the application. Historically, conventional ceramic membranes have been relegated to a narrow range of the most challenging applications given their comparatively higher manufacturing cost and resulting higher prices.
