Automobiles

Properties

This product is an automotive air filter containing PAN nanofiber with thickness of 80-130 nm. The thickness of 70 percent of the fiber is less than 100 nm. This product shows 12.5% and 10% enhancement in absorption capability and filtration efficiency, respectively. The pressure difference in two sides of filter increases by adding nanofiber. Nanofibers due to large surface area, high ratio of length to width with low density causes great particle collection during the cleaning process leading to increase in the filtration efficiency. The mechanism is that the thin layer of nanofiber web forms a barrier for particles while allowing the air to “slip” through the large volume of small pores. The large surface area of the nanofibers traps smaller particles, while air slips through the particles and filter medium.

High Specific Surface Area

Manufacturer's Description

A particulate air filter is a device composed of fibrous materials which removes solid particulates such as dust, pollen, mould, and bacteria from the air. Polyacrylonitrile (PAN) with linear formula (C3H3N)n also known as Creslan 61, is a synthetic, semicrystalline organic polymer resin. It is a versatile polymer used to produce large variety of products including ultra-filtration membranes, hollow fibers for reverse osmosis, and fibers for textiles and oxidized PAN fibers. Nanofibers, with smaller thickness and higher surface area than regular fibers, have enormous applications in filtration. Electrospinning (also called electrostatic fiber spinning) has been one of the promising processes to produce continuous nano-scale fibers from both synthetic and natural polymers.
